What is Cobot Picking?
Cobot picking refers to the use of cobots to autonomously identify, grasp, and relocate items within a production or warehouse setting. Unlike traditional industrial robots, pick-and-place cobots are designed to work safely alongside human operators for enhanced efficiency without compromising workplace safety.
Equipped with advanced vision systems, end-of-arm tooling, and machine learning capabilities, FANUC pick-and-place cobots can perform repetitive picking tasks with exceptional speed and precision. Whether retrieving parts from bins, loading components onto conveyors, or placing objects for further processing, cobots streamline the pick-and-place process while freeing up human workers for more important tasks.
Cobot picking is especially valuable in dynamic environments, where flexibility and consistent performance are essential for maintaining throughput and product quality. The CRX line of cobots, offering payloads up to 30 kg, can move items with simple drag-and-drop programming and easy hand guidance, while FANUC’s heavier-duty CR-35iB can lift up to 50kg.
Cobot Picking Software
iRPickTool
Because no two automated pick-and-place production scenarios are the same, FANUC’s fully customizable iRPickTool software makes it easy to adapt picking and placing operations. FANUC picking cobots can be added to any number of conveyors, products, package configurations, and line setups. Our automated picking tools are fully customizable, ensuring you get the optimal return on your robotics implementation.
iRVision Bin Pick
This software option allows the vision system to recognize the position and posture of parts placed inside a container, and for the cobot to assess how to best pick those parts. It also uses Interference Avoidance to prevent collisions between the robot, gripper, and the bin walls.
iRVision Client
This software allows the pick-and-place robot to interface with vision hardware. Coordination between the vision hardware and software depends on the software version installed.

Cobot Picking FAQs
In a cobot picking application, a cobot autonomously identifies, grasps, and relocates items within a production or warehouse setting. Equipped with advanced vision systems, end-of-arm gripper tooling, and machine learning capabilities, picking cobots can perform repetitive picking tasks with speed and precision.
Price ranges for automated picking systems can vary greatly, depending on the requirements of the end user. Cobot systems, however, are generally less expensive than traditional robot solutions that require additional safety infrastructure. And in many cases, pre-engineered picking robot solutions like FANUC’s selection of Cobot-and-Go solutions, by FANUC Authorized System Integrators, can be especially cost-effective.
FANUC’s line of flexible CRX cobots can handle payloads of up to 30 kg (or 66 lbs) while the company’s CR-35iB can manage payloads up to 50 kg. Additionally, the line of CRX pick-and-place cobots boasts an impressive reach of up to 1889 mm.
Cobots are a natural fit for high-mix, low-volume picking tasks. With AI vision, picking software, and a wide range of end-of-arm tooling supplied by FANUC Approved Device Partners, picking cobots can work as flexibly as needed.
The FANUC CRX cobot is the only cobot on the market with FANUC reliability, offering 8 years of “Zero Maintenance” on motors, reducers, sensors, cables, and grease. The CRX has FANUC industrial-strength reliability proven through accelerated life tests on the following parts: castings, reducers, cables, sensors, and PCBs.
